Military Ensigns
The Military Ensigns adopt the colours and forms of the existing Army, Navy and Air Force ensigns, merging them with the now proposed national flag, the Ponga.
The Ponga version introduces both the central fern within the Southern Cross and the tricolour stripe on the bottom third part of the ensign.
The white on the fern is replaced by the red, marking the military use of these ensigns.
The National Crest is added in order to mark the efforts made by the Defence Forces in defending New Zealand and its interests.
The crest of the three services is optional, and is expected to be used in official ceremonies.
The upper two thirds of the ensigns reflect the colours of the presently existing ensigns.
The New Zealand Army Ensign
- Dimensions: Proportion 1:2
- Colours: Blue (Pantone 280C); Red (Pantone 186C); White; Black (Pantone 6C)
Until this day, and contrarily to the other services of the Defence Forces, the New Zealand Army uses the national flag as its ensign.
This motivated the creation of a differenced ensign only very slightly different from the proposed new national flag.
Both flag and ensign differ only on the colour of the fern and on the existence of the New Zealand Army crest on the upper left corner, which is optional.
The Royal New Zealand Navy Ensign
- Dimensions: Proportion 1:2
- Colours: Red (Pantone 186C); White; Black (Pantone 6C)
This ensign maintains most of its original elements, only excluding the Union Flag and adding the above mentioned elements from the proposed Ponga flag.
The Queen's Colour of the Royal New Zealand Navy
- Dimensions: Proportion 1:1.2
- Colours: Red (Pantone 186C); White; Black (Pantone 6C); Blue (Pantone 280C)
The Union Flag is maintained on its original position, as recognition of the monarchical bonds with the United Kingdom.
The Union Flag occupies the upper left quarter of the ensign.
The upper right quarter is occupied by the Southern Cross and fern, both in full red.
The Queen's seal occupies the central horizontal position, immediately beneath the imaginary line separating the upper from the bottom vertical half.
The tricolour stripe on the bottom occupies one fifth of the vertical height of the ensign.
The Royal New Zealand Air Force Ensign
- Dimensions: Proportion 1:2
- Colours: Blue (Pantone 280C); Cambridge Blue (Pantone 557); Red (Pantone 186C); White; Black (Pantone 6C)
This ensign maintains most of its original elements, only excluding the Union Flag and adding the above mentioned elements from the proposed Ponga flag.
The service crest of the Royal New Zealand Air Force is not used as an option in this proposal. Instead, its used the roundel on the present ensign as a matter of tradition.
The choice for using the roundel or the official crest is, as always, of the entire responsibility of the defence service.
